Is the AMEX Gold Card Worth it?
Does the Gold Card make up for its $250 Annual Fee?
Uber Credit: Actually worth $120
There is a hefty $250 annual fee for each 12 months you have the card. However, the $120 Uber credit
is easy to use; just one Uber ride or Uber Eats pickup/delivery should use the full $10 Uber Cash monthly.
Dining Credit: Actually worth $60
The $10 monthly dining credit is a nuisance for most people. The best option is to pick up food via Grubhub
once a month. Because this is easy to forget some months, I only value this credit at half: $60 instead of $120.
So, I make back $180 of the $250 annual fee in credits [$120 Uber + $60 Grubhub], leaving $70 to justify. But, the biggest draw of the AMEX Gold Card is the 4x AMEX Points bonus on dining and groceries.
Thus, if you aren't a big food spender, there are better options than the AMEX Gold.
Alternative Options:
If you spend less than $200 on groceries and food weekly, consider one of these pairs instead:
➡️ CapitalOne's SavorOne [3% on Groceries & Dining] AND VentureX [Makes SavorOne worth ~50% more]
➡️ Bilt Mastercard: [3x Bilt Points on Dining] AND Citi Custom Cash [5% on groceries up to $25 back/month]
The AMEX Gold is a solid option as a 3rd card (or later), as it's of medium-high difficulty to get approved for.
